How Does the Continuous Asphalt Plant Work?

The working principle of a Continuous Asphalt Mixing Plant mainly includes the following key steps:

Cold Aggregate Feeding and Heating:

Cold aggregates are fed into the cold aggregate bins and then conveyed to the drying drum. In the drying drum, the aggregates are heated and dried by a burner, removing any moisture. The heating is a continuous process, with the aggregates constantly moving through the drum.

Continuous Mixing Process:

After drying, the hot aggregates flow continuously into a mixing chamber. In this chamber, they are mixed with the correct proportions of hot bitumen (asphalt binder) and, if required, mineral filler. The bitumen is heated and stored in a separate tank, and it is fed continuously into the mixing chamber.

Addition of Recycled Materials (if applicable):

If recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) is used, it can be introduced into the process at a specific point, typically before the mixing chamber. The recycled material is heated and mixed with new aggregates and bitumen.

Mix Discharge:

The mixed asphalt is then continuously discharged from the mixing chamber. It is either transported to a storage silo or directly loaded into trucks for transport to the construction site.

Dust and Emission Control:

A continuous asphalt plant often includes dust collection systems, such as baghouse filters, to capture and reduce dust emissions. Additionally, some plants have systems to manage and reduce the emission of fumes and other pollutants.

Control System:

The plant's operation is controlled by an automated system, which regulates the flow of aggregates, bitumen, and other additives to ensure consistent quality and output. The control system monitors and adjusts temperatures, flow rates, and mixing times.

What are the types of Asphalt Mixing Plant?

Asphalt mixing plant is the general asphalt production equipment that is broadly applied to road construction, such as urban and rural roads, parking lots, highways, airports, harbors, and other paved surfaces. Nowadays, road construction plays an important role in the development of the economy. Therefore, there is a larger demand for the asphalt batch plant on the market. In general, it can be divided into various types according to different standards as follows.

According to process flow (mixing method):

It can be divided into: Continuous Drum Type and Intermittent Forced Type. Continuous Drum Type, that is, the production is carried out in a continuous and uninterrupted mixing mode, and the heating and drying of aggregates and the mixing of mixed materials are carried out continuously in the same drum. Forced Intermittent Type, that is, the heating and drying of aggregates and the mixing of mixed materials are forced to be carried out periodically. The equipment stirs each pot separately, and each stirring takes 45 to 60 seconds. The output depends on the equipment model.

According to production capacity:

It can be divided into: Small, Medium and Large. Small, that is, the productivity is below 40t/h. Medium, that is, the productivity is between 40 and 400t/h. Large, that is, the productivity is above 400t/h.

According to handling method (migration method):

It can be divided into: Mobile, Semi-fixed and Fixed. Mobile, that is, the silo and mixing pot are equipped with tires, which can be moved with the construction site, suitable for county and township roads and low-grade highway projects. Semi-fixed, that is, the equipment is installed on several trailers and assembled at the construction site, mostly used for highway construction. Fixed, that is, the equipment operation site is fixed, also known as asphalt concrete processing plant, suitable for concentrated engineering and urban road construction.
